Souvenirs history
Knowing the past to better see the future
Souvenirs have been a part of human history for centuries. The term "souvenir" comes from the French word for memory, and originally referred to items kept as a reminder of a particular event or experience.
In ancient times, people would collect small objects such as shells, stones, or figurines as mementos of their travels. These items would be brought back from distant lands and displayed in homes as a symbol of wealth and status.
During the Middle Ages, pilgrimage souvenirs became popular among Christians who traveled to holy sites in search of spiritual enlightenment. These souvenirs included badges, medallions, and other trinkets that were often imbued with religious significance.
The 18th and 19th centuries saw the rise of the Grand Tour, a popular form of travel among wealthy Europeans that involved a visit to the cultural centers of Italy, France, and other countries. Souvenirs from these travels included artwork, pottery, and other decorative objects.
In the 20th century, the rise of mass tourism led to the production of a wide range of souvenirs, from keychains and postcards to t-shirts and shot glasses. These items are often cheaply made and sold in tourist shops around the world.
More recently, the rise of digital technology has led to the creation of virtual souvenirs, such as digital photos and social media posts. NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, represent the latest souvenir.
